Roche a Perdrix - 7002' - nw ridge class 5.4
july 2017
This is a classic short hike just to the east of the border with Jasper National Park as you drive from Edmonton to Jasper. I met up with a northern Alberta local to make this fun short climb. The smoke was quite bad, but the climbing was easy. Starting from the highway a short ways before entering the park, a dirt road pull-out can be utilized as the last crown land camping spot before entering the park. The trail begins here and ascends more or less up the NW ridge until the ridge steepens. A chimney is climbed directly up the face for 4-5 pitches not exceeding 5.4 or 5.5 in difficulty. At the end of the last pitch, the ridge eases and continues for 20 minutes or so of class 2 to the summit.
To descend it was pretty easy to walk down north and around to skiers right of the ridgecrest on a steep boot path, then curving back to meet the base of the route, and follow the same approach trail back to the highway.
