Canyon Mountain - 4901' - Class 1
May 2016
After Sarah and I hiked Mount Matier in BC, we continued driving all the way to Whitehorse, the capitol of the Yukon Territiries. Along the way we passed Prince George, and the mountains in northwestern BC including a side trip to Stewart and Hyder which is at the very SE corner of Alaska. We drove up a long dirt road above the White Salmon Glacier deep into the mountains to an active mine. The road had actually just been plowed and still had 3-4 foot high snow walls on both sides! The scenery was incredible, and driving in a place so close to a massive glacier was quite strange. The gallery below shows the photos of this scenic drive we did. I cannot wait to return here and climb some of the routes I spotted on the granite towers looming in the distance.

Once we made it to Whitehorse, we ended up spending a couple days here to explore around a little. One cool evening we hiked up Canyon Mountain (AKA Grey Mountain) which is the peak that looms above town with the radio tower. It ended up being a beautiful hike but cold and breezy. We saw a few ptarmigans still in their white feathers, and watched a beautiful sunset. It was only a couple hours total from the car to the summit and back but well worth it.
