Grays Peak - 14,278' - CLass 1
Torreys Peak - 14,267' - Class 1
August 2011
These two 14ers I did with a couple friends from the swim team who had never been up any Colorado Peak and wanted to try it. So we all piled into my car and drove out to the Stevens Gulch Trailhead and drove as far as I could get up the road before having to park before a rough spot just over halfway up. Having to walk the rest of the road wasn't too bad though. We steadily made out way up the trail and by no means were we alone. There were perhaps hundreds of people doing Grays and Torreys on this fine Saturday morning. I was amazed to see how green it still was for August. The wet winter before really kept things lush and there evan was remaining snow patches. I went on ahead just as the trail got steeper and Stephan stayed with Colton and Michaela. I got up Grays Peak quickly and snapped some nice photos but there were simply too many people around so I started traversing to Torreys Peak. There were much less people on the traverse. Once I was on top of Torreys the late morning clouds really made for some spectacular scenery. I started down the trail and I waited at the small signed junction where one trail heads to Grays and the other heads to Torreys. After a little while we all met back up and walked down back to the car together. Afterwards we all went to Idaho Springs for a carbo load. It was nice to bring a couple friends on their first 14er. They certainly enjoyed it and liked the scenery.
