Back in January 2017, I went to the south island of New Zealand with plans to climb Mount Cook and Mount Aspiring. The weather did not cooperate though and the only mountain activities we were able to do was hiking to the Mueller Hut one morning when Cook showed himself for a mere 6 hours, hike to the summit of 5774 foot Mount Richmond just south of Nelson, and a small hike above Arthur's Pass. The remainder of the trip was spent playing tourist and driving around to experience as much of the south island as possible. I ended up circling around the island almost twice!

Mount Richmond - 5774' - south route
Mount Richmond is the highest Peak in the group of mountains immediately south of Nelson. All the peaks in this area are gentle but the views are commanding. Our route involved a long hike from the south along a beautiful ridge to the Richmond Saddle hut, then an easy romp up the west slopes.
