Square top mountain - 13,794' - Class 2
May 2012
Finally I managed to summit this dumb peak! Mandy and I drove up to Guanella Pass to camp the night and do an early morning stroll up Square Top before my flight to Florida that evening. This would be my 4th try on this peak as I got turned around once from fog and snow in November, once from deep snow in February, and once from a freak blizzard in November. Now that it was May it was going to be very easy and Mandy and I were able to leisurely make it up and down in a few hours from the pass. The lower lake was also even melted out to our surprise! We also saw some wildflowers working their way up as most of the snow from the exceptionally dry winter of 2012 was long gone. Mandy and I relaxed quite a bit on the large summit taking a look at conditions at all the nearby peaks. Most of the east aspects were still holding lots of snow and many of the couloirs were still looking decent. Our hike down went fast and on the drive back down Guanella Pass we stopped a bunch to take some nice spring photos. That evening I went to the airport to fly to Florida to visit family for awhile.
